How well do you know your own backyard?

Artist Sarah McDermott, whose book Channel & Flow is in our exhibit,  grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC. On a visit home, McDermott turned her attention and curiosity to the landscape of her own home territory, particularly that of Tripps Run, the 10-mile waterway that traverses Northern Virginia. She embarked on a hike along the entire length of the stream, encountering scenes of lush nature juxtaposed with concrete and pipes. From this experience, McDermott would eventually create Channel & Flow, mapping anew the terrain that was once her everyday landscape.

Learn more about her story and follow the development of the book on the Women’s Studio Workshop blog, where you can see great in-process photos of the book.
