Today we had a great visit from Professor Ed Bisese’s Drawing II class. In a few weeks, Bisese’s students will be working on their own mapping projects, so they visited the gallery to see how other artists have used mapping in their work.
The students discussed Carmon Colangelo’s use of historical maps is his work, Lise Melhorn-Boe’s use of the HIV/AIDS body mapping practice, and Melissa Hill’s unique way of gathering data by observing the night sky from her kayak in the bay. They also discussed the challenge of designing and presenting a map in such a way that would captivate a viewer and communicate a strong story, such as in Floating Lab Collective’s Mapping Why.
And they were also big fan’s of the drawings by Jacob Lahah — himself a former Drawing II student who, not too long ago, was put up to the same mapping challenge that these students will take on in the coming weeks.
